Western Red Cedar Cladding

Western Red Cedar Cladding has proven for centuries, that it is a building material offering beauty, versatility and durability. Western Red Cedar cladding is valued for its distinctive appearance with a warm reddish brown colour, a tight straight grain and few knots. It blends effortlessly with other façade materials to give a low maintenance, contemporary appearance to many current building projects.

When used as an external cladding Western Red Cedar is one of the world’s most naturally durable cladding species, rated Class 2 according to BS EN 350-2. Furthermore BS 8417 provides for an expected 60 year plus lifespan if the sapwood is excluded. The timber requires no treatment due to its natural resistance to moisture decay and insect damage. Improved durability can only be achieved with modified timber products such as Accoya or THERMA Wood. It is also important to note that how a cladding is detailed and fixed will have an effect on its lifespan.

Western Red Cedar is one the lightest softwoods available having a density of approx 370kg/m3. As a result of this low density the timber is easy managed and easy to work with.

Corell Timber’s architectural grade Western Red Cedar is sourced from well-managed forests. Western Red Cedar is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia and Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year. For each tree harvested three are planted to ensure perpetual existence. Western Red Cedar has the least impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is biodegradable.

Coating Suitability

The timber does not require any further treatment and can be left to weather to a natural silver grey. However, with its high dimensional stability, Western Red Cedar is an ideal timber for factory coating and Corell Timber work closely with Teknos who provide a range of translucent products to highlight the natural colour and beauty of the timber. It can also be fire retardant treated using suitable coating products by Teknos.

Western Red Cedar offers a high level of dimensional stability due to its low density and shrinkage factors.

It is easy to work with on both hand and machine tools, though it dents and scratches easily due to its softness. It can sand unevenly due to the difference in density between the earlywood and latewood zones. It glues and finishes well.

The manner in which any timber cladding is fixed is fundamental to its performance in both appearance and durability. Like a lot of timbers suitable for external claddings we recommend stainless steel fixings—screws or nails may be used.

N.B. Iron-based fasteners can stain and discolour the wood, especially in the presence of moisture.
